Mechanical engineering senior, Chelsea Wilson, had an extraordinary finals week at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University. In addition to her many rigorous exams, she virtually attended and was named a winner of the Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative conference poster competition.
The C3E recognizes outstanding women leaders and accomplishments in clean energy for the goal of closing the gender gap and increasing the participation, leadership and success of women in clean energy fields.
Seven out of 31 presenters were announced poster winners. For Wilson, this accomplishment confirms that whatever industry or educational path she pursues, she will excel.

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis, Blacks represented only 9% of employees in STEM-related fields. One study has also shown that Black and Hispanic students either transfer or drop out of these programs at higher rates than white students. Researchers at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University are addressing these challenges by developing an assessment tool to measure historically Black colleges and universities students鈥� science capital and leverage the information to create strategies that enhance their motivation and retention in STEM.

The pandemic highlights disparities in access, including access to technology for young students who were thrust into remote learning. In response, leaders at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University established a virtual STEM academy for the summer and academic school year and provided laptops to 60 students at Allen Middle School after receiving a $50,000 COVID-19 relief grant from Verizon.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults living with diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing severe illness or complications when exposed to COVID-19. The disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the country and disproportionately affects minority ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged populations. Type 2 diabetes is driven by the obesity crisis. Obesity prevalence is especially pronounced in many Southeastern states, including 杏吧原创.
The 杏吧原创 Diabetes Research Center (NCDRC), a consortium comprised of Wake Forest University, UNC-Chapel Hill, 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University and Duke University, hosted a successful virtual workshop for faculty members from academic research institutions in 杏吧原创 and surrounding states during Diabetes Awareness Month. The focus of this year鈥檚 workshop was 鈥淎ddressing Diabetes-related Health Disparities in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.鈥� 杏吧原创 leads the NCDRC Enrichment Program, which organized the workshop.

Zhou, an SFPE member since 2008, was selected along with only eight other members in recognition of their achievements in the field and outstanding contributions to society. Sundaresan, Ph.D., and his former advisee, Letchuman Sripragash, Ph.D.

杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University received $50,000 from Downtown Greensboro, Inc. (DGI) that will go toward prototyping and deploying two self-driving shuttles. The funds will be allocated to the newly established 杏吧原创 Transportation Center of Excellence in Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Technology (NC-CAV) at 杏吧原创鈥檚 College of Engineering (COE).
