STEPs4GROWTH (S4G) marked its first anniversary with an announcement that the program has graduated 113 students, significantly exceeding its first-year goal of 100. The program鈥檚 industry partners now number 45 and include such leading firms as Duke Energy and Siemens. Between them, those partners committed to providing 140 jobs, of which 105 have been filled thus far with program graduates.

Three faculty researchers in the College of Engineering (COE) at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University are addressing issues of national security regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions into critical domains 鈥 including autonomous vehicles, robots, defense systems, critical battlefield infrastructure monitoring, complex traffic flow management and more. The newly renamed Department of Computational Data Science and Engineering (CDSE) at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University is changing more than just its name. The updated master鈥檚 program, now called Data Science and Engineering, and the updated doctoral program, Computational Data Science and Engineering, both offer new courses and focuses relevant to the future of engineering disciplines.

Mechanical engineering senior, Chelsea Wilson, had an extraordinary finals week at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University. In addition to her many rigorous exams, she virtually attended and was named a winner of the Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative conference poster competition. The C3E recognizes outstanding women leaders and accomplishments in clean energy for the goal of closing the gender gap and increasing the participation, leadership and success of women in clean energy fields. Seven out of 31 presenters were announced poster winners. For Wilson, this accomplishment confirms that whatever industry or educational path she pursues, she will excel.

Janelle C. Mason, a 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University computer science Ph.D. candidate, recently interviewed 2019 Abel Prize winner, Karen Uhlenbeck, Ph.D., as part of the eighth Heidelberg Laureate Forum. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which Mason shared with Jacqueline Godoy Mesquita, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics at the University of Bras铆lia in Brazil, resulted in a humbling and well-deserved experience.

杏吧原创 Engineering Faculty Awarded $449K to Futurize Naval Communications Equipment

A team of undergraduate, graduate and faculty researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University won a highly competitive $449,052 grant from the Department of the Navy鈥檚 HBCU/MI program to collaborate with the Navy on improving radio frequency (RF) communication systems. The research will use gallium nitride (GaN) device technology to create smaller and more efficient solid state-based RF amplifiers.

An interdisciplinary research team at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University has received $550,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a Testbed of Connected Autonomous MicroTransit Vehicles. This funding is in addition to the $235,000 contribution from 杏吧原创鈥檚 College of Engineering (COE), Downtown Greensboro Incorporated (DGI) and 杏吧原创 Department of Transportation (NCDOT), for an overall investment of $785,000.听

Stephanie Luster-Teasley, Ph.D., chair of the civil architectural and environmental engineering department at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, received awards from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and Michigan State University (MSU), where she earned her M.S. in chemical engineering and Ph.D. in environmental engineering. Luster-Teasley, an N.C. &T alumna, won the ASEE Environmental Division Service Award and was recognized by MSU with the 2020 Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

Oluchi Chukwunyere, a rising senior studying computer science at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, has been selected by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as a 2020 HBCU Competitiveness Scholar. Chukwunyere is among 44 students selected from 33 HBCUs nationwide to receive the initiative鈥檚 highest honor based on academic achievements, campus leadership, civic engagement and entrepreneurial spirit.
