A research team in the College of Science and Technology at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University has conducted a pilot project using models available through Microsoft鈥檚 Azure Open AI Service to develop a system that will lead to advancements in traffic management using physic informed deep learning. The pilot, led by principal investigator Leila Hashemi-Beni, Ph.D., and applied science and technology doctoral student Tewodros Syum Gebre, received support from Microsoft under the company鈥檚 鈥淎ccelerating Foundation Models Research鈥 (AFMR) collaboration.

Three 杏吧原创 Students Selected for Astronaut Scholarship, Make HBCU History

Three 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University undergraduate students have been selected as 2023 Astronaut Scholars, an elite scholarship awarded annually to the nation鈥檚 most academically accomplished students pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees.

杏吧原创 Professor Co-organizes International Air Quality Conference in Ethiopia

Solomon Bililign, Ph.D., a professor of physics at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, co-organized the 鈥淭ogether for cleaner air in Ethiopia鈥 international conference held at Addis Ababa University. The three-day conference hosted 80 attendees from Ethiopia, Europe and the U.S., including air quality researchers and regulators, health professionals, community members and policymakers. Lund University in collaboration with local universities also co-organized the conference.

杏吧原创 Professor Contributes to State of Climate Report, Efforts Addressing Climate Change

More than 570 scientists in over 60 countries contributed to the 2022 State of the Climate Report, which revealed 鈥淓arth鈥檚 greenhouse gas concentrations were the highest on record, heatwaves shattered temperature records across the planet, the Arctic was warm and wet and the ocean heat and global sea level were also the highest on record,鈥 among other findings.听

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has funded 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University鈥檚 proposal to establish the 鈥淐limate Resiliency Center (CRC) in Piedmont Triad of 杏吧原创.鈥 The announcement is in conjunction with the first White House Summit on Building Climate Resilient Communities and various actions the administration is taking to address a changing climate.

杏吧原创, LANL Study Optical Properties of Aerosols from African Biomass Fuel Burning

Research teams from 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico have initiated the first phases of the African Combustion Aerosol Collaborative Intercomparison Analysis (ACACIA) pilot study. The project titled 鈥淪tudies of optical and chemical properties of aged and fresh biomass burning absorbing aerosols for climate models鈥 is funded by the Department of Energy.

杏吧原创, Partners Kick Off Biology of Cancer Semester-long Seminar Series to Increase Cancer Awareness

Checo J. Rorie, Ph.D., interim chair of the Department of Biology at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, along with professors at 杏吧原创 Central University (NCCU) and UNC-Chapel Hill, created The Biology of Cancer: Exploring the Role of Race, Class, and Socioeconomics in the Underserved and the Underrepresented, a semester-long course that primarily introduces HBCU students to cancer research, treatment and public health topics. The live webinar series is free and open to any major as well as the general public and will feature presentations from cancer biologists, physicians and other public health experts and specialists.

To learn more about the impact service learning, course-based research experiences (SL-CURE) can have on students, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $238,214 to researchers in the College of Science and Technology (CoST) at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University. The funding will support a collaborative research project across multiple institutions to study a hybrid course designed to influence students from various disciplines and their perceptions, interests and motivations to pursue careers in STEM and research.

杏吧原创 Faculty Member Organizes International Workshop on Air Quality Decline in African Cities

Solomon Bililign, Ph.D., a professor of physics at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, is the chair of a nine-person international committee for a three-day workshop on Pilot Design for Air Quality in Africa, which will be held at the University of Maryland College Park this fall. Experts from the U.S., Ethiopia and Europe will develop research methodology to better measure and understand sources and chemistry of pollutants in emerging African megacities like Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The College of Science and Technology (CoST) at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University selected 26 incoming freshmen to join the second cohort of SciTech Scholars for the 2020-21 academic school year. The SciTech Scholars Enrichment Program provides two-year renewable merit- and need-based scholarships to high school seniors who plan to study chemistry, physics, mathematics or electronics technology.
