ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Tops Money Analysis of Attendance Costs, Delivering Strong ROI for Third Year

By Todd Simmons / 07/16/2025

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 16, 2025) – For the third consecutive year, ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Agricultural and Technical State University boasts the lowest attendance costs for a doctoral research university in America bearing the R1 or R2 Carnegie classifications, according to Money magazine’s newly released “Best Colleges in America 2025.”

The designation is based on Money’s weighted analysis of typical cost factors each student faces, including net price to attend, average student debt and ability to repay debt and net price of a degree. ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´’s “estimated full price for 2025-26” is $21,460, which ranked it well ahead of all other doctoral research campuses and No. 7 among all campuses.

Once the average financial aid package is factors in, the ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ price tag drops by nearly half to $10,900.

ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ leaders have worked to keep costs to attend low for in- and out-of-state students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in terms of tuition, fees and campus housing, as well as in making financial aid widely available.

“Of all the recognition ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ earns each year, this is among the most valuable and important to us,” said Chancellor James R. Martin II. “It validates the decision that our students and their families made as consumers in choosing ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´. For prospective students, it’s evidence that ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ provides the best return on investment and is looking out for their best interests financially.”

Data released in 2024 by Forbes showed that 10 years after graduation, ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ bachelor’s degree graduates earn a median salary of $112,000. In the Piedmont Triad, ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ is one of the most academically competitive universities, second only to Wake Forest University in admissions rigor, according to a national analysis by the Business Journals group.

A significant portion of ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ students are among the first generation in their families to attend college, and 52% receive a Pell Grant, the largest type of need-based federal financial aid. Such students may come from homes where resources to pay for college are scarce, making the ranking even more important.

Other University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ System campuses also show up well in the Money affordability rankings, owing to efforts by the UNC System and the State of ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ to ensure a college education isn’t priced beyond the means of the state’s residents. Historically Black campuses Fayetteville State University, which leads the nation in affordability, and Elizabeth City State University both landed in the top 20, while the UNC School of the Arts and UNC-Chapel Hill rank in the top 50. The Money rankings included 730 universities nationwide.
