Leila Hashemi Beni, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Built Environment at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, will lead a project to address gaps in flood extent mapping capabilities by incorporating data gathered by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, and implementing deep learning models. She will contribute data science expertise and collaborate with the 杏吧原创 Department of Public Safety, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA).

The 杏吧原创 Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for the safety of 13,500 bridges in the state. According to Ali Karimoddini, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, each of those bridges, regardless of their condition, is inspected at least once every two years, in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). That adds up to a lot of time, personnel and money to ensure the safety of North Carolinians and visitors.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a three-year $550,000 grant to Narayan Bhattarai, Ph.D., an associate professor of bioengineering at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University, to research metal-composite biomaterial that will significantly reduce the inflammation and scar formation of wounds, leading to more effective healing for patients. Bhattarai is the sole principal investigator on the grant titled, 鈥淏iodegradable Composite Nanofiber Meshes that Contain Degradable Metal Particulates.鈥

This past week, 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University鈥檚 Aggie Autonomous Auto (A3) team completed the four-year Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) AutoDrive Challenge in Mcity, Michigan. Throughout the four-year competition, the team converted a standard electric vehicle to level-four autonomy. On March 5, the world was reintroduced to Zamunda with the premiere of 鈥淐oming 2 America鈥 on Amazon Prime. Fans from all generations gathered together at home to enjoy this anticipated comedy and many were captivated by the fashion and the esthetics of the set that gave us a front-row seat to the continent of Africa. The behind the scenes work that brought these intriguing visuals to life was due to our very own, James 鈥淛immy鈥 Hawkins, who is a costume designer that worked as a fitter on the set of the movie.

University Galleries to Host In-Person Exhibition, 鈥淔reedom Ship: The Works of Curtis James鈥

The University Galleries at 杏吧原创 Agricultural and Technical State University will open its in-person exhibition, 鈥淔reedom Ship: The Works of Curtis James鈥 on April 1, 2021 to run until June 30, 2021. The exhibition features 18 works by James that illustrate the 2006 children鈥檚 book, 鈥淔reedom Ship鈥 by Doreen Rappaport. The story is based on the life of Robert Smalls, an escaped slave who piloted the slave ship, Planter, carrying other escaped slaves to freedom past the confederate battleships in Charleston, South Carolina. The exhibition was made possible through the generous art donation by Texas businessman Arthur Primas, who donated 35 works of art, including works by James and Bryan Collier.
